Diamond is the hardest substance on the Mohs hardness scale and is the only abrasive capable of grinding superhard materials. CBN is a new type of artificially synthesized material developed in the 1950s, with hardness second only to diamond. When applied properly, both can perform excellently in cutting/grinding specific materials. Although CBN and diamond are both superhard abrasives, their fields of use vary by material. Generally speaking, diamond is used for grinding non-metallic hard and brittle materials, while cubic boron nitride is used for grinding ferrous metal materials.
